The advances in microelectronic and communication systems have made ways in building miniaturized, low cost of sensing and communicating devices that can be deployed on physical environments for collecting perceived physical information. Collection of such intelligent sensors forms wireless sensor networks that allows transmission of sensed data in multiple hops towards the information gathering node, which is called the sink node. Since this network can prospect around environments and action of humans, it is considered as one of the important technologies in implementing ubiquitous and pervasive systems. Thus, efficient sensor test-beds have been on extraordinary demand by colleges and universities for educating and researching the recent wireless sensor network technology. Following this trend, Hanback Electronics developed a wireless sensor platform (HBE-ZigbeX) based on Atmega 128L CPU and CC2420 RF, as well as providing an RFID Reader that can be operated on ZigbeX. The ZigbeX can provide solutions to education, research and performance evaluation of the wireless sensor networks. Moreover, various optional sensors and enhanced server platforms (used as a sink node) make ZigbeX a more intelligent and flexible device. Users can easily learn about wireless sensor networks, MAC, embedded system, and sensing control mechanisms by using our proposed platform and the various examples included with the platform.
